DJ Q-Bert’s Amazing Kickstarter-Funded Interactive Album Cover

He’s described it as music that originates “from other planets and dimensions from around the galaxy,” and the album sleeve for DJ Q-Bert‘s new release looks just as alien.

Funded by a Kickstarter campaign that raised $128,000, the jacket sleeve for Qbert’s new double album release Extraterrestria/GalaXXXian is being hailed as the world’s first interactive record packaging.

Check out the below video to see how it works.

The revolutionary touch-sensitive gatefold cover was created in collaboration with Doug Cunningham and Jason Noto of Brooklyn-based Morning Breath Incalongside Qbert’s own media management company Thud Rumble, which he co-founded in 1996 with Ritche “Yogafrog” Desuasido.

The sleeve works by connecting with Algoriddim’s DJay iOS app (via Bluetooth), which then transforms it into an interactive MIDI DJ controller. By accessing QBert’s album, or any MP3 for that matter, through the DJay app, users can trigger sounds, scratch, manipulate, mix and distort songs via the built-in controller.

Extraterrestria/GalaXXXian is the long-awaited follow-up to DJ Qbert, aka Richard Quitevis’ 2001 debut Wave Twisters and features guest appearances from cellist and trombonist Dana Leong and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes/N*E*R*D fame, San Francisco duo Tipsy and MC’s Kool Keith and Del the Funky Homosapien.
