From the beginning of his career, Eminem made a name for himself internationally with his titles My name is (1999), Without me (2002), Lose yourself (2002) or later, Not Afraid (2010). The rogue aspect of him contrasts with the sometimes vulnerable sensibility of some of his compositions. However, rap is the business of tough guys, with battles between singers being a prerogative of the medium. But his inimitable flow makes him recognizable among all, unique forever.
And if he rarely mixes with others for artistic collaborations, if he also shows a hungry ego… it seems that God sometimes manages to touch him. He has often been seen sporting crosses falling on his chest, but he can be quite rude and outspoken in his words.
Until the day DJ Khaled offers him to participate in his album God Did, released in August 2022, for which he sings “Jesus is my Savior”.
About a year and a half ago, Kanye West visited rapper DJ Khaled in the wee hours of the morning. They play music with each other and, while DJ Khaled prepares his God Did album, he remembers an inspiring gospel title from his friend (from his Jesus is King album), who he offers to play with Eminem for the occasion.
The rapper from the movie 8 Mile and the newly turned singer thus join Jay-Z, Lil-Wayne, Dr Dre or even Drake in the list of collaborators of the album in preparation that tops the Billboard Hot Christian Songs chart with the remix of Kanye “Use This Gospel” by West. He can be heard singing, “I’m holding on, but I don’t know if I’ll hold on anymore / Today is the day I put all my trust and faith in You, Father.”
After suffering from poor mental health and drug addiction a few years ago, to an overdose in 2007, it seems Eminem has turned to the Bible.
So my Savior I call to save me from these pits of despair / So these demons better stop cause He’s my shepherd / I’m armed with Jesus, my weapon is prayer / Call me Jesus, I’m crazy in the head, maybe I’m crazy / It doesn’t matter, I never pretended to be perfect / As long as I recognized the mistakes”.
For his part, Kanye West covers the verse of the opening song:
“Use this gospel for protection / It is a hard road to Heaven / We ask for your blessings / In the Father we put our faith / King of the Kingdom / Our demons tremble / The holy angels defend / In the Father we put our faith.”
The God Did album reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Christian Songs Top Albums chart, which Kanye West achieved in 2019 with his Jesus is King album within the first week of its release. A new wind is blowing in the world of rap. God did that?
