You have probably heard that catchy “Nossa, nossa, assim você me mata” beginning from Michel Telo’s “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” hit song. This track is, by far, one of the most popular Latin music songs of the year. The video of this single has reached over 360 million views on YouTube and the track has been on top of the Billboard Latin Songs chart for nearly four months. Despite this tremendous success, this song has the risk of becoming the next Latin music nightmare.
This tune has all the elements that transformed some of the most popular hits in Latin music into some of the most annoying songs ever to be produced. First of all, “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” has the typical catchy and simple sound of some of those hits. Second, the song has been excessively overplayed by radio stations all over the world. Third, Michel Telo’s unexpected popularity can posed a serious challenge for this singer to overcome this sudden success especially for an artist who plays a musical style (Sertaneja) that is unknown to people outside Brazil.
I have nothing against this song. In fact, I have embraced it from the very beginning. However, I think “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” is doomed to be the next nightmare in Latin music. Very likely, one year from now that catchy “Nossa, nossa, assim você me mata” beginning will probably force people to change radio stations. Fortunately, this song is not the “Macarena” and I really hope nobody in the near future comes up with a track that horrible.
