NBCUniversal Telemundo to Build New $250 Million Global Headquarters in Miami

Comcast and NBCUniversal Fund New Headquarters, Opening In 2018


In a clear nod to its growing clout inside the U.S., NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises announced today plans to break ground on a new 450,000 square foot facility in Miami that will serve as the company’s new headquarters and house all its operations under one roof. The construction, estimated to cost over $250 million, is being funded by NBCUniversal and parent company Comcast, underscoring Comcast’s commitment to Telemundo’s  growth.

The new NBCUniversal Telemundo global headquarters will house the Telemundo Network, Telemundo Studios and Telemundo International, as well as cable network NBCUniverso and the company’s digital media operations.

While Telemundo’s current facilities are currently in the more industrial Hialeah area of Miami, the new headquarters will sit on 21 acres at NW 25th St. and the Florida Turnpike, a highly visible location that will allow thousands of drivers every day to see the Telemundo logo. Ground was broken today and the new facility is expected to open in 2018.

It will initially house 1,100 employees with capacity for 1,300.

“This is a very important step in the evolution of our company at a time when we’re enjoying tremendous momentum and have just wrapped a record-breaking year,” said Cesar Conde, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and NBCUniversal International Group, in a statement. Telemundo, which broadcasts the yearly Billboard Latin Music Awards, has seen its ratings grow steadily over the past two years. While the network was long the runner-up to Univision in ratings, it has been steadily narrowing the ratings gap, sometimes surpassing Univision with specials and sports programming and even in its regular lineup.

A big factor in Telemundo’s success have been its original “super series,” which are far removed from Univision’s rosier soap operas. They include the drug-themed El Señor de los Cielos and Celia, based on the life of Celia Cruz.

Comcast’s backing of Telemundo underscores the company’s investment in Spanish-language programming.

“Our investment in this technologically advanced building is the latest example of our enthusiasm for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, its bright future, and our strong commitment to Florida,” said David L. Cohen, senior executive vice president and Chief Diversity Officer, Comcast Corporation.
