Ricky Martin And Simon Cowell Team Up To Find The Latin One Direction

The group, of course, was One Direction, and they’ve since achieved global stardom and reigned supreme in this modern age of boy-bandery. But now, it looks like Cowell might be trying to give the British babes some competition.

Cowell’s Syco Entertainment is partnering with Univision for a brand-new reality competition show called “La Banda” (The Band) that will premiere in September. Much like “American Idol” and “The X Factor,” the show will host talent searches with the goal of creating a five-member boy band comprised of Spanish-speaking pop stars. The show will feature contestants ages 14 and over from the U.S., Mexico, Central and South America, the Caribbean, and Puerto Rico.

The best part is, the show has just named its first judge: none other than Ricky Martin, one of the Latin music world’s biggest stars of all time. Martin will serve as a judge and executive producer of the show, and he’ll even manage the final chosen band, which will score a contract with Sony Music Latin.

Martin, of course, is perfect for this role because he’s a seasoned boy band alum. He first got his start as part of Menudo when he was just 13 years old, and later went on to enjoy a stellar solo career.

Overall, the show sounds like a totally intriguing concept, especially considering the fact that Latin music hasn’t had a globally successful pop boy band in years.

“There is a generation in Latin America that is desperately hoping for something like this,” Martin told Billboard. ”It’s a phenomena that happens every decade, and now is the time.”
