The Latin tropical sensation vaults a 41-6 jump to reach the chart’s top 10 for the first time
Latin tropical star Romeo Santos soars 41-6 on Billboard’s Social 50 chart. With the jump, he reaches the list’s top 10 for the first time.
The Social 50 ranks the most popular artists on YouTube, Vevo, Facebook, Twitter, SoundCloud, Wikipedia, Myspace and Instagram. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers along with artist page views, song plays and reactions as measured by music analytics company Next Big Sound.
Santos’ ascent follows the Dec. 5 announcement of the finalists for Univision’s Latin music fan-voted award show “Premio Lo Nuestro.” Following the nominations – Santos is up for four awards, including Artist of the Year and Song of the Year – he began rallying his millions of followers to participate in the voting process. “Premio Lo Nuestro” will air on Univision Feb. 18.
Santos’ strong presence on Facebook, where he adds 835,000 new followers for the week (a 357% bump over the previous frame), is a major factor in his Social 50 upswing. Also during the week, his video on Vevo for “Propuesta Indecente” rapidly approached the 100 million views mark; his could become the first Bachata video ever to be so certified by Vevo.
Further down the list, U.K. pop quartet Little Mix, which was formed on the eighth season of that nation’s “The X Factor” in 2011, bounds 30-11 after its appearance on the U.S. version of the competition series on Dec. 5. As a result, the act sees a 28% rise in reactions on the Facebook platform, where the group adds 518,000 new fans during the chart week (up 337%).
Little Mix’s online popularity is characterized by the unique ways in which it engages with its fans. On Dec. 7, the group hosted the Mixers Salute Party, a live-streamed celebration of its upcoming album, “Salute,” set to be released on Feb. 4.
Also just outside the Social 50’s top 10, Pentatonix charges 24-16 in its second week on the chart. The reason for the rise continues to be the a capella act’s wildly popular video cover of “The Little Drummer Boy,” which helps drive 19 million views to its YouTube channel this week (a 111% increase over the previous frame). The quintet’s rise in popularity is further evidenced by a 42% gain in weekly views to its page on Wikipedia.
Back to the Social 50’s top 10, Miley Cyrus continues her winning streak, spending her 12th week at No. 1, while Ariana Grande reaches her highest position on the chart (3-2). Justin Bieber jumps 7-3, aided by the Dec. 2 video debut of “All That Matters,” which contributes to the 78% jump in overall plays he experiences over the previous week. Eminem slides 2-4, ranking right above Ludacris (8-5).
One Direction slips 5-7 on the Social 50, while Katy Perry drops 6-8. Nicki Minaj creeps into the top 10 (11-9), while Rihanna falls 4-10 to anchor the leaderboard’s top 10.
