Yandel is a phenomenally successful Puerto Rican vocalist, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He’s a reggaetón artist, but he’s much more. He fits into multiple styles of modern music – hiphop, r&b, pop. Maybe that’s why he was the only Latin artist included in the 2014 ESPN Music Issue Magazine. He’s young, but he’s a veteran, with a solid fifteen-year track record as a bona fide superstar in the duo of Wisin & Yandel, before taking a new turn as a soloist in 2013.
Yandel is the first artist of his genre to have an HBO Latino TV special, which will premiere in April 2015. To be titled Yandel: Legacy, De Líder a Leyenda Tour, the special features Yandel performing with his musical collaborators, surprise guests, and more, in his electrifying live sold-out performance at José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum. There will also be an exclusive special,Yandel: Camino al Concierto, airing prior to the concert that will bring fans up-close-and-personal and behind the scenes footage leading up to Yandel’s final stop on his sold-out De Líder a Leyenda VIP Tour. The tour began in April 2014 and continued through summer, playing sold-out houses in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, McAllen (TX), Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Washington DC, New York, Orlando, and Miami. A second leg of the tour went out from September through November, playing to delirious crowds at large venues in Paraguay (three cities), Buenos Aires, Santo Domingo, Mexico City, Tampa, Santiago (Chile), Las Vegas, and in Yandel’s home territory of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Yandel’s new live solo album, Legacy: De Líder a Leyenda Tour Deluxe Version comes out February 3. Following a similarly titled EP that came out during the tour, the new “Deluxe Version” features 20 tracks. Mixed by Earcandy (Roberto “Tito” Vásquez), it has guest appearances by a string of reggaetón stars from Puerto Rico — Tony Dize, J Alvarez, El General Gadiel, Farruko, D. Ozi, and Ñengo Flow — along with rising Colombian star Reykon and veteran salsa superstar Gilberto Santa Rosa. And that’s not all: he’s just recorded a new track, “Marcando Territorio,” for Catch the Throne II, the mixtape series for HBO’s megahit series Game of Thrones.
Yandel’s previous release, De Líder a Leyenda (From Leader to Legend) was released in November 2013 and debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums chart and #9 on the Top Rap Albums chart. It was certified gold (Latin) by the RIAA in March 2014, and received a Latin Grammy nomination. The album’s third single, “Moviendo Caderas” featuring Daddy Yankee, has over 94 million views on Vevo.
Born Llandel Veguilla Malavé Salazar on January 14, 1977 and raised in Cayey, Puerto Rico, Yandel began his career in 1995. He started Wisin & Yandel together with Wisin (Juan Luis Morera Luna) in 1998. Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, their debut, was released in 2000. The album’s title (“kings of the new millennium”) proved accurate: their nine studio albums have collectively sold more than 20 million copies. Some of his other collaborators include: J-Lo, Akon, R. Kelly, 50 Cent, Ja Rule, Eve, Nelly Furtado, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, and many more.
Yandel has more than 7 million likes on Facebook, and more than 585,000 Twitter followers.
