Underground Theme Park? IN ORLANDO??‏

Buzz on the radio about an underground theme park coming to Seminole County was too good to be true for many Central Floridians. And they were right. It was all an April Fools’ joke. The ad made a splash after Orlando radio station Power 95.3 started running ads a week ago announcing the first-of-its-kind underground park coming to rural Chuluota Monday, April 5. “The whirlwind world of water splash zone and more, all totally under the surface of Orlando.” There was a phone number, directions and even a Web site. “The world’s first underground adventure park! Call (407) 494-DOWN for more information.”

When you call the number, you get somewhat muffled directions. “Left on Lockwood Road, quick right on Chuluota Road, follow the signs on Chuluota Road for four miles…” Then the directions were drowned out by static. The station announced it was all a prank the morning of April Fools’ Day. When News 13 initially discovered the ad over the weekend, I followed the directions, going exactly 4 miles down what’s also known as County Road 419. It took me to a spot with no signs of a park.

On one side of the street was a wooded area. On the other side was a bar called the Hitching Post. Inside, the ad had become a hot topic. “I gave the number to a lot of people,” one customer said. Residents of the rural community said it wass unlikely any type of business could be opening on 50 acres in Chuluota without them hearing about it. They wondered if the ad was some sort of gimmick or a stunt, but Power 95.3 were tight-lipped about it until April 1. The radio station staff said they hoped to smooth any ill feelings of people in town, offering to buy them beers Thursday at the Hitching Post.
