MIAMI (WSVN) — A longtime Miami service group unveiled three announcements Thursday as they counted down to Carnaval 2015.
The Kiwanis Club of Little Havana has been active in South Florida for 40 years. For 38 of those years, they have hosted Carnaval Miami. Kiwanis Club of Little Havana president Tony Lorenzo said the event has expanded tremendously. “It began as a small festival 38 years ago to help our community, and it’s grown now to one of the biggest festivals in the world,” Lorenzo said.
Carnaval Miami is an annual fundraising event that attracts hundreds of thousands of people to Miami’s iconic Calle Ocho for food, music and a sample of Latin flavor. Lorenzo said that many revelers have so much fun that they forget the charity aspect. “A lot of people don’t know that, not only is Calle Ocho a lot of fun and a great event, multi-cultural for everybody to come, but all the funds that we raise go right back into the community,” he said.
On Thursday the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana announced that the title of Carnaval Miami King would be shared by two people: Venezuelan pop duo Chino & Nacho. Miguel Mendoza said the pair will bring good vibes. “Happiness and joy, that’s what we hope to bring to the Carnaval this year,” he said.
The honor of Miss Carnaval goes to Kassandra Montandon. She won the title in the Miss Carnaval Miami pageant earlier this month.
And one more reveal was announced Thursday: Artist of the Year, an honor that is going to painter Humberto Benitez. His vision for this year’s poster, titled “Mambo,” brings a little inspiration from New Orleans to Miami.
Carnaval Miami 2015 kicks off at Calle Ocho March 15. Lorenzo encourages everyone to attend. “I want to see everybody in Calle Ocho March 15 enjoying not only the culture, the music, the food. Just have a great time. It’s a day to be happy and enjoy life,” he said.
