Romeo Santos, Sony/ATV, Mayimba Music Celebrate at ASCAP Latin Music Awards

Romeo Santos, who last week tied Enrique Iglesias as the only Latin artist to score five No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart from a single album, was named Songwriter of the Year at the 21st annual ASCAP Latin Music Awards.

This marks the third time Santos has won the coveted award, but it’s the first time he hasn’t shared it with another songwriter.

Santos, who arrived at the ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on March 19 after a grueling day of travel following several canceled and delayed flights, is in the midst of his U.S. tour in support of “Formula, Vol. 1,” his first solo album following his career with bachata star group Aventura. The album has yielded a string of hits, all penned by Santos.

In addition to Santos, top honorees of the evening included Sony/ATV Discos Music Publishing, winning Publisher of the year for the 11th year in a row with 34 songs, including Shakira’s “Addicted to You” and Pitbull’s “Rain Over Me” (featuring Marc Anthony). Mayimba Music — Santos’ publishing house — won Independent Publisher of the Year.

The song of the year was “Inténtalo (Me Prende)”, the runaway, multi-genre dance hit written by DJ Erick Rincón and Sergio Zavala and performed by tribala guarachero phenom 3BallMTY. Latin Power Music published the song.

In addition, norteño legend Ramón Ayala and his group Los Bravos del Norte were honored with the Creative Voice Award.

The ASCAP Latin Music Awards honor the writers and publishers of ASCAP’s most-performed Latin tracks of 2012 in pop, tropical, urban, regional Mexican and television categories.
